Children’s eye health
Why is an eye exam for children important ?
The eyes play a pivotal role in a child’s development, growth, and learning.
In many cases, children may not be able to express their visual problems, which makes early and regular eye exams essential to detect any issues that could affect vision in the future.
Some eye conditions, if not diagnosed and treated early, may lead to permanent amblyopia or problems that become difficult to treat later on.
When should children have their eyes examined ?
-
At 6 months – initial screening
- At 3 years – vision and strabismus check
-
Before starting school (ages 5–6 years)
-
Then annually, or as needed
If the child shows concerning symptoms or has a family history of eye diseases, the examination should be done earlier.
Signs that may indicate a visual problem in your child :
- Tilting the head or covering one eye when looking
- Noticeable or hidden strabismus (crossed eyes)
- Sitting very close to the TV or holding books too close
- Difficulty concentrating or poor academic performance
- Complaints of headaches or frequent eye rubbing
- Excessive light sensitivity or frequent tearing
If you notice any of these signs… don’t wait — have your child’s eyes checked immediately.
